How to Develop Skills and Experience Outside of an Internship

Not only do Internships allow you to test your fit within companies, industries and roles, but they also provide the opportunity to build new skills and experience relevant to your career.  Landing an internship is not always guaranteed, however, and can be a lengthy process. If you are unable to secure an internship, you’ll want to develop a back-up plan that allows you to build skills and gain experience in other ways.

The most successful students start by assessing what skills they’ll need to be successful and differentiate themselves as top candidates. Once you identify the skills you want to build and improve, conduct research online to find possible resources and opportunities for skill development.  These can range from participating in the gig economy and micro-internships to completing virtual experiences, courses and tutorials online. Applied projects and volunteering can also provide valuable experience. Schedule an appointment with your career coach to solidify your plans.
