Set yourself up for success with the right resumes!

As a business student, you may be thinking, “Why do I need a public resume on Handshake? I thought I was supposed to craft a tailored resume for each job application. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of tailoring my resume?” These are great questions, and you’re not alone in asking them!

Tailored resumes are meant to be submitted with an application in direct response to job opportunities you are actively seeking and pursuing in accordance with your job search strategy. The language of these resumes should be aligned with each specific organization of interest. Successful students often integrate keywords from each unique job description when creating tailored resumes, which helps increase their chances of receiving interview invitations for those specific roles.

In contrast, the public resume is meant to attract a wide variety of recruiters whose opportunities may or may not be posted, enhancing your opportunities to be contacted about jobs you may never have been aware of otherwise. While the language in your public resume should align with that used in the industry/function you are targeting, it should be broad enough to be applicable to a variety of unknown organizations and their opportunities.
