What can you do with a Business Sustainability major?

As a Business Sustainability major, this degree provides the opportunity to explore different functional areas of business, while looking to create a more sustainable future.

At W. P. Carey Career Services, we have found that you are most successful securing a position when your goals are specific and clear. Business Sustainability majors typically choose one of two career paths:

  • A career in a business function, serving an organization whose mission relates to sustainability. For example, you might work as a consultant for a company that manufactures renewable energy technologies and products. This option allows you to lend your business skills and experience to an organization whose mission serves your sustainability goals. Your daily work, however, might not always be directly related to sustainability; for example, working in HR within a waste management company.
  • A sustainability role for an organization whose mission is unrelated to sustainability. For example, you may target a sustainability analyst role for a technology company. This option allows you to leverage your sustainability knowledge in your daily work, but the organization’s direct mission may not be related to sustainability.

When evaluating these paths, ask yourself: what problem do you want to solve? What do you want your daily work to look like, and what path serves you best? Remember, you are often more successful in securing a position when you have developed your career goals.
