What to consider when selecting a Law School

You are certain that you want to attend law school and have been directing your efforts towards this commitment. You have already researched the following: location, cost, faculty, size, culture, career support, alumni, curriculum, reputation/rankings, student organizations, and more. Now, you feel ready to prepare the application materials. Before taking this next step, it is important to reflect on the following questions to inform your decision on which schools to apply.

  1. What are you passionate about?
  2. What motivates you to attend law school?
  3. In what field of law would you like to specialize?

Defining your field of interest is critical because not all law schools are the same, nor will they have all specializations in areas of law, such as immigration or environment law. Admissions committees do not admit candidates that have only a desire to attend, but those that can articulate their interests and how they are aligned with that of the school’s. To improve your chances of being accepted, it is necessary for you to reflect on your priorities, find the schools that offer relevant programs, and take time to analyze and communicate the reasons behind your decisions.

Research your interests by reading about different fields of law,  consulting faculty, and setting informational interviews with law professionals.  To learn more, take a look at the following articles:
