Human resources (HR) encompasses the entire employee lifecycle from recruitment to onboarding and spans across multiple focus areas such as training and development or compensation and benefits. Given the scope of the HR field, it is important to understand each of the HR areas, in order to target your internship and job search appropriately. These areas are: 

  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Development & Retention
  • Employee Relations
  • Operations
  • Recruitment

Depending on the size of the organization, some roles may encompass several or all of these HR functions, while others may focus on just one. Small organizations often hire generalists who have a broad scope of responsibilities, while larger organizations will often hire specialists focused on each of these areas independently.
