Common Career Paths for Economics Majors

As an economics student, understanding possible career paths to pursue after graduation is an important step in the career management process. Identifying ideal career paths requires first researching what each career path is all about.  Here are brief explanations of a few common career paths chosen by economics majors:

Economic Analysis:  Economic Analysts work for both businesses and government agencies and spend their time gathering, organizing, and analyzing macroeconomic data. These roles are typically computer and data-intensive, and an understanding of basic statistics will be helpful in these roles.

Banking:  The roles of Loan Officer/Relationship Manager in a bank understandably include a great deal of customer interaction, and the focus is on account services, making loans, and providing the other services modern financial services organizations provide.  You will typically focus on either consumers or businesses.

Wealth Management/Financial Planning:  Wealth Managers and Personal Financial Planners provide retirement and other financial advice to clients.  These roles allow for a mix of computer work, client interaction, and the task of bringing in new clients. Compensation may include a commission component.

The Law:  It is also quite common for Economics majors to head to law school after their undergraduate studies and prepare for a career in the law.  While most Lawyers focus on giving legal advice to clients, there are also roles as Litigators, Public Defenders, and Prosecutors in which you would spend ample time in the courtroom.
