Introduction

At IBM, work is more than a job – it’s a calling: To build. To design. To code. To consult. To think along with clients and sell. To make markets. To invent. To collaborate. Not just to do something better, but to attempt things you’ve never thought possible. Are you ready to lead in this new era of technology and solve some of the world’s most challenging problems? If so, let’s talk.

Your Role and Responsibilities

IBM is seeking an intern to work on the analysis of remotely-sensed imagery as part of The Jefferson Project at Lake George, a collaborative research effort with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and The FUND for Lake George. The project focuses on advances in environmental monitoring, management and prediction, especially related to water resources. Further information is available at http://jeffersonproject.rpi.edu. An important element of this work is understanding the formation and impact of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Current work has focused on in situ measurement and ecological modelling. The project team is beginning to explore the complementary role of remotely sensed data (e.g., from orbit) that can be calibrated with the on-going approach to precision in situ observations and coupled to predictive models to enable identification, characterization and prediction of HABs.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Image processing and analysis methods, including classification and machine learning techniques
  • Programming in Python
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Geography or a related field
  • Enrolled in a graduate (Masters or Ph.D.) program in one of the aforementioned fields

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience with multi-spectral imagery from optical sensors (visible and infrared) on polar orbiters (e.g., MODIS on Aqua and Terra, OLI on Landsat 8 or MSI on Sentinel 2A/2B) and/or geo-stationary platforms (e.g., ABI on GOES-16) as well as data from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) such as from Sentinel 1 spacecraft
  • Experience with Jupyter notebooks
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
