This position specifically supports Mayo Clinic’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) is one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated clinical laboratory and pathology departments. The department performs more than 20 million laboratory tests annually in support of Mayo Clinic as well as the more than 4,000 Mayo Clinic Laboratories clients around the world.
Backed by the knowledge and expertise of more than 160 consultants and over 4,000 employees in a wide range of professional roles, the department supports patient care from the patient’s bed side to esoteric laboratory and pathology services. The department works collaboratively with its colleagues in Arizona, Florida and throughout the Mayo Clinic Health System and has Mayo Clinic Laboratories testing sites in Florida.
Supports SCM leadership by utilizing industrial/system engineering, Lean and Six Sigma expertise to develop and deploy processes and systems to improve supply chain operations quality and productivity. Leverages quantitative and qualitative techniques to identify improvement opportunities and to design, analyze, implement, and improve systems of people, processes, and technology. Trains personnel how to use lean tools, and process improvement techniques, to identify waste and reduce costs. Performs cost benefit analysis to determine the return of investment (ROI) of capital expenditures and project initiatives and influences leadership to invest in improvements. Supports SCM leadership with the development of business strategy and planning, SCM service line development, business process engineering, and business transformation.
This specific engineering role is part of a new team that is working to transform supply chain capabilities for Mayo’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. While this position will be based in Minnesota, it is an enterprise position and will support labs across Mayo’s three U.S. regions. The engineer will work alongside supply chain operations and DLMP personnel to develop and document standardized effective and efficient processes. This role will also work to identify areas for improvement, create projects, and build and lead teams to execute. In addition, this engineer will be responsible for partnering with Mayo Facilities and DLMP Engineering to improve existing and design future lab facilities to ensure that space and equipment is included to ensure effective and efficient flow and storage of materials. Finally, this position will focus on optimizing existing order/inventory management software and define requirement for future software capabilities.
The majority of work for this engineering position will center in Rochester, MN but the candidate must be able to travel to perform work at all U.S. Mayo sites in the Midwest, Florida, and Arizona. The staff member will be able to work in hybrid mode working onsite and from home as needed.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Industrial and Operations Engineering or related engineering, operations, or technical field with at least 4 years of experience to include expertise in several of the following areas: consulting/advising, continuous improvement, operations analysis, workflow analysis, staffing analysis, process engineering, systems analysis, leadership & facilitation, team building, and project management or a Bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least 6 years relevant experience.
Additional Qualifications: Expertise in Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement tools and methods. Proficient in defining and effectively and efficiently leading, managing, and executing projects to include required change management for staff members, processes, and systems. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to influence all levels of leadership, are required. Proficient in the use of statistical and data visualization tools (e.g. Excel, R, JMP, Tableau, etc.). Demonstrated ability to teach others in both 1:1 and group settings. Ability to publish posters, white papers, articles in business journals and/or presenting at conferences to document and share improvements.
