Make a great first impression at on-campus events

What we know is that students sometimes show up for events ill prepared and are then disappointed in themselves because they didn’t put their best foot forward.  First impressions matter.

While we know that organizations come to campus to find talent, your work is showing up in a way that differentiates you in a crowded marketplace.  We know that taking the time to be thoughtful about approaching recruiting events in a way that can showcase your preparedness as a candidate and build connections at your target companies will help you build your confidence and likelihood of success.

As companies continue to host events, your preparation needs to account for the possibility that an event could be virtual or in-person. In all cases it is important to review all of the event information on Handshake including location, companies attending, and roles being recruited for.  Successful students tailor their personal communications after conducting company and industry research and identifying how their talents and skills align to each organization’s needs.

With your research informing how you show up, you can develop tailored messaging, intentional questions, and specific follow up actions, leading to a positive impression as a candidate and additional connections. *Don’t forget to dress the part and account for virtual/in-person demands [parking, wifi, navigation, etc.]
