Function vs. Industry: What’s the difference?

Many students often confuse the differences between job function and job industry. We know that the ability to differentiate between the two is instrumental in targeting your search as well as positioning yourself in the market.

An industry is a categorization of organizations that produce similar kinds of goods or services – think: what is the space or type of products/services you want to work in? – ex. Airlines, Technology, Entertainment, Education, Healthcare

A job functions is an area within the structure of a company or organization that is grouped by the specific activities and core contributions made to the business – think: how do you want to contribute to an organization? – ex. Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, Accounting, Supply Chain

Considering both function and industry in your career exploration can help you focus and anchor your research, personal branding, and overall job search strategy.
