Which Marketing career path is right for you?

So you’re interested in marketing, but what does that mean in terms of aligning skills and interests? Using the Marketing Career Map can help guide decision making. It is separated into 4 main buckets of interest, then fans out by skill set alignment and potential career paths. The 4 categories are Strategy and Planning, Content, Analysis, and Execution. Based on these categories, many students find themselves either in a Sales focused path or a Non-Sales industry specific path.

This determination is a major pivoting point in your journey that allows you to align your course work, additional certifications, and job search accordingly! There are also student organizations and career fairs specifically targeting these specified paths.

Additionally, this determination will affect your internship and job search strategy. While sales students will primarily search for opportunities via the on-campus job search, non-sales students will find their search to be more networked and follow more of a just-in-time timeline.

Do market research in order to understand your core values in career management. You will need to identify and communicate your industry, function, and role of interest, because employers are looking for students who can articulate their goals and specialized skills effectively.
