Ask About Top Priorities

As a recent W. P. Carey graduate starting a new job, it’s a great idea to ask your new boss what your top priorities should be in your new role. You can phrase your inquiry as, “What are the most important tasks I should focus on, and how can I contribute to the team’s success?” This question demonstrates your willingness to learn and clarifies your expectations and goals as a new member of the team.

Inquire About The Company’s Long-Term Vision

“Could you provide some more insight into the company’s long-term vision and how my role contributes to achieving this?”

You want to communicate to your boss that you are planning for the future and looking for every opportunity to add value to the company as you grow and thrive there. A truly vital team member is doing more than just completing tasks day-to-day; they are instead looking for opportunities to grow themselves and their company in the same efforts.

Discuss Timeframe for High-Priority Tasks

In preparation for a new phase of my career, I considered how my future boss could assist me in achieving my communication goals within the office. Whether working remotely or in person, efficiently reporting to my superiors and team members is important to me. I inquired about the best timeframe for addressing high-priority tasks. Open communication with your boss is always key to accomplishing important tasks.

Seek Guidance on Skills Development

The one question a recent grad should ask their boss during the first week in a new role is, “What skills and qualities should I focus on developing to excel in this role and contribute most effectively to the team?”

This question shows initiative, a desire for self-improvement, and a commitment to adding value to the organization.

Define Success

“What does success look like in this role?”

This question is an excellent way to set clear expectations, prevent misunderstandings, and optimize your efforts. Never assume what constitutes success in your role!

Asking this question can help you understand precisely what your boss and the organization expect from you in your role, as well as ensure that you focus your efforts on the most critical tasks and priorities.

Additionally, asking this in your first week demonstrates your eagerness to succeed and your commitment to doing your best in the role!

Clarify Expectations and Responsibilities

It’s important to understand expectations and responsibilities when starting a new role. This will set you up for success and keep lines of communication open.

Important questions to ask are:

  • “What is my main objective for week one?”
  • “What should I focus my time on in the first 30-90 days?”
  • “Who are the most important people I need to connect with first?”
  • “How can I share my ideas?”
