How to leverage AI tools like ChatGPT in your job search.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around since the 1960’s but since the release of ChatGPT in November of 2022, it’s been a hot topic everywhere, including the career space. It’s no secret that students are using generative AI to help them in their academics, but what about for career exploration or job search? As tempting as it is to ask ChatGPT to write your resume for you, we know that it’s neither the most ethical nor the most authentic way to leverage AI tools.

Generative AI is anticipated to grow and become even more integrated into the workforce, which means recruiters and hiring managers are aware that college students are using tools like Bard in their application process. Just like generative AI learns with each prompt you give it, employers are becoming more and more savvy to what is AI generated. AI has limitations including a reliance on historical data, which might not be up to date with the latest industry shifts or job market changes. There is also the risk of generated content being so similar to information available online that it could raise red flags for plagiarism. Additionally, content created with AI often has misinformation included, leading to skills and qualifications being inflated.

ChatGPT and other similar generative AI tools are useful and valuable resources that can be leveraged at many phases in your career journey. As an example of a good use case, instead of asking ChatGPT to write your resume, provide a detailed prompt asking it to suggest improvements or edits based on what you’re applying for. Alternatively, you can ask it to analyze a job description to identify skills and keywords to integrate into your tailored application materials.

While AI can’t replace the human touch and expertise from career professionals, it’s prudent to leverage resources together. Take a look at the following articles to learn more.
