Leverage LinkedIn for Global Networking

LinkedIn has been invaluable for my business. Even though I’m based in Phoenix, AZ, my customers and potential future customers are worldwide. One of the best ways to connect and build your network is through LinkedIn. I’ve built business relationships and friendships with people who come to Phoenix to speak, or to attend a conference, or are here for a meeting. This isn’t going to get you business overnight, but by monitoring your inbox for real invitations to meet, taking the chance, and nurturing your connections, you might be sitting down with your next future client.

Curate a Feed of Expert Insights

As a digital marketer, LinkedIn has become the absolute best resource when it comes to seeing case studies and examples of how others have succeeded or failed—with both results leading to incredible learning experiences. Sure, there is a lot of content out there, but you don’t always have time to sit down for a deep-dive research session. By following LinkedIn experts in your respective field, you can curate a feed of incredible insights, not only in the posts presented but in the many comments and responses contained within. It’s all gold.

Create Content for Serendipitous Opportunities

I have found LinkedIn to be an amazing platform for making serendipitous opportunities happen. In fact, LinkedIn indirectly led me to move from Ireland to Arizona State University as a Fulbright scholar in 2017. I happened to come across someone mentioning the Fulbright scholarship, which ultimately led to me researching how wearable technology is used in insurance at ASU for six months. While at ASU, I opted to start creating content on LinkedIn (initially focused on my research at ASU), and since then, I have amassed over 7 million views on my content, met many amazing people across the globe, and found many opportunities as a result.

For students looking to leverage LinkedIn, my key piece of advice is to actively engage on the platform. Start by ensuring your profile is polished, with a professional photo and a compelling ‘About’ section that showcases your strengths and aspirations. Then, dive into networking by interacting professionally with others in your field. LinkedIn is more than just a job search site; it’s a platform for building relationships, learning, and discovering opportunities you might not find anywhere else.

Optimize LinkedIn to Build Your Brand

LinkedIn is a super-valuable resource not only in your job search but also for building connections with those outside of your direct circle. It’s always important that you’re expanding your network outside of ASU or grabbing coffee with alumni in your field. You want to build your presence on LinkedIn to invite new opportunities and to present your professional brand in the best light. These are some tips that have boosted my exposure and grown my connections within and outside of ASU.

There are a few ways to optimize your page and best practices to showcase your skills. My first piece of advice would be to always be transparent about your skill set and highlight the areas you excel at. You can upload your resume and other favorite projects under the ‘Featured’ tab on your profile. LinkedIn Learning allows you to take courses and earn additional certifications on your page.

Next, you want to expand your network and send requests to your peers, professors, and other professionals. As you grow your connections, you have the opportunity to earn a ‘Top Voices’ badge, which you can use to showcase your expertise or interests through blog posts.

In my experience, being more active on LinkedIn has helped me build my professional brand and find more opportunities on and off campus.
