What “Panic Engagement” Is and How to Avoid It

You may be thinking, “All of my friends have internships or jobs lined up, but I am not seeing anything that matches my interests!” Such thoughts can lead to “panic engagement,” a term used to describe the stress you may feel when you do not understand why you are not having success in a job search and apply to positions without strategic intent. We know that marketing has different recruitment timelines for sales and non-sales roles. Knowing the timeline that matches your career goals can help alleviate stress and empower you with the knowledge needed to prepare accordingly.

Marketing roles are split into two categories, sales and non-sales. Sales roles are often secured during on-campus recruiting, in the fall semester. Non-sales, alternatively, recruits talent through just-in-time recruiting in the spring. In order to succeed in recruiting for either a sales or non-sales role, it is critical that you network to gain and maintain advocacy within your chosen industry and target firms.

Knowing these timelines can help you prepare accordingly and adjust your expectations. To learn more about the different areas of Marketing, check out the Marketing Career Map. Meet with your Career Coach to discuss personalizing and prioritizing your goals for the career navigation process.
