Are you ready for a resume appointment?

When you think about your job or internship search, what comes to mind first? Many students jump straight to the resume. While the resume is an important aspect of the career management process, it is not the first step. In fact, when taking a look at the W. P. Carey Career Management Model, you’ll notice that we have identified resumes as part of the last step in the process.

If working on your resume is not the first action item, you might be wondering where you should begin. The answer to that is strategy! Before landing at ASU, you most likely identified factors in an institution that were important to you, had a list of schools you were considering, and did a bit of research on each before choosing to submit an application. Ideally your job or internship search process will mirror this approach. You will want to take a step back and assess your skill set, values, and interests as your first priority. This will lead to the market research phase where you will verify that your industries, roles, and functions of interest are in alignment.

We recognize that getting started can be overwhelming. That’s why in addition to having access to your Career Coach as a thought partner, we have created the Career Blueprint. Before scheduling your first resume appointment, review and complete Part 1 and 2 of the Blueprint. Your coach will need to know your value proposition and what you are targeting before they can give quality feedback on your resume.

Schedule an appointment with your Career Coach to further talk about where you are in your process and how you can navigate to the next phase of your career management journey here at business school.
